Abstract
Hospitality provider Compass Group UK & Ireland crowned the winner of its first ever matcha latte contest, the ‘Compass Matcha Smackdown 2019’, this week.

Cristian Fernando, who works at a Restaurant Associates site in Milan (Italy), took the crown from 12 other barista finalists after demonstrating “consistency in his skill with strong professionalism” throughout the four ‘intense rounds’.

The inaugural Matcha Smackdown was open to Compass baristas across the UK and Italy, and challenged contestors to “produce amazing looking and tasting matcha lattes.”

As part of his prize, Fernando was awarded a tea tasting and blending session with Teapigs (competition partner) co-founder Louise Cheadle, a Teapigs gift set and £200 shopping voucher.

Agnieszka Wojciechowska also of Restaurant Associates came in second place.

Steve Lovegrove, head of business excellence – central marketing at Compass UK & Ireland, said: “It was brilliant to see first-hand the amazingly talented baristas that (Compass) has across the business.

“Huge congratulations to Cristian Fernando of Compass Group, Italy for winning the inaugural competition.

“My sincere thanks go to every single barista who kept us highly entertained by showcasing their enviable skills, so much so, that we’re already planning our next event.”

The final took place at Compass’ headquarters (Chertsey) with the company’s coffee education and training manager, Sonali Tailor, heading the judging alongside Louise Cheadle (Teapigs) and Owen Thom from the SCA.
