Caterers urged to support National Chip Week

7th Feb 2008 - 00:00
Abstract
McCain is urging caterers to invest in the best chips to ensure that National Chip Week, which runs from 11-18 February, is a real success.
Next week will provide a great opportunity for caterers looking to draw in additional customers and tempt them with chips presented as sides, snacks or accompaniments. Independent research suggests that 80% of people would recommend an outlet that serves great chips. Chips are served with approximately 70% of pub meals, and 85% of people said that having bad chips would ruin their meal – and reduce their likelihood of returning. More than 50% of people respondents like their chips served with either tomato ketchup or salt and vinegar. Mayonnaise, curry sauce, brown sauce and gravy followed as favourite accompaniments. Only 4% favour their chips plain. Adrian Greaves, McCain foodservice associate director, commented: "With around 70% of meals being served with chips, which typically cover 40% of the plate it is vital to get them right. Bad chips are simply not acceptable for a country which prides itself on the great British fish and chips. "National Chip Week is a great opportunity for caterers to boost sales and profit by promoting the week and actively selling more – as well as having fun celebrating the humble spud."
