Abstract
The Trustees of Borough Market will be launching a sustainable new project that will bring the community into the heart of the Market to learn more about food, where it comes from and how to cook it.
The glass rooftop function room and top floor will provide space with views over the market and Southwark Cathedral and will be used for corporate functions/events. These rooms will be available for hire by external organisations, will be catered for by trainees from the floors below and will provide income for the community activities. The aim is that there will be food-related educational talks and events such as cookery book launches or food demonstrations. The second floor will be a suite of prestigious offices overlooking the Market and providing an income for the building. The Food Centre will have three floors (basement, ground and first floor) of dedicated, free or low cost space for Voluntary and Community groups, Schools and colleges, Vocational training in the hospitality sector. This will also include a trainee kitchen on the ground floor to train people into the industry.
Planning permission for the project was given in April 2007 and the aim is for the building to be ready in 2008.
