Abstract
UK workers are potentially damaging their productivity levels and wellbeing as only a third manage to take a proper tea break, according to new research by Tetley.

A study of 2,000 British workers examined the nations tea breaks and found that 44% said they are too busy at work to take a tea break.

A quarter of British workers believe that they aren’t allowed tea breaks, whilst one in five (20%) said that they take fewer breaks in a typical day than five years ago.

Some workers (20%) are also worried that their boss might think they are slacking if they tea break, causing many to wait until lunch for a brew, with over 15% of lunches in the workplace paired with tea.

Tetley is now calling on 500 British businesses to help ‘Bring Back The Tea Break’. A number have already pledged their support, including Russell Hobbs, Virgin Media and Mr Kipling.

Isabelle Haynes, senior brand manager, OOH at Tetley, said: “The power of a quality cup of tea has long been a source of rejuvenation for Britain’s workforce and the tea break is integral in the workplace. An estimated 12.3bn cups of tea consumed annually across the UK.

“Whether employees escape to the staff canteen for calming brew, or spend ten minutes in a café in between meetings, taking time out to properly break from work and recharge is important and can have a beneficial effect for businesses and employees alike.

“With the backing of some of Britain’s biggest companies, we look forward to seeing bustling staff canteens and cafes, packed full of the nations workforce fuelled by Tetley Tea.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for contract caterers and operators alike to communicate the significant benefits associated with the Great British Tea Break and encourage people to use your facilities.’’
