Sodexo achieves IS0 14001 accreditation at Shetland Hospital

11th Nov 2010 - 00:00
Abstract
Sodexo, a leading provider of on-site service solutions, has achieved the ISO 14001 accreditation for its environmental management system at Gilbert Bain Hospital, part of NHS Shetland.
Sodexo made it a priority to achieve the ISO environmental management system accreditation as the hospital is in the Shetland Islands. It has also worked closely with hospital staff to develop an environmental management system which enables them to monitor and manage the impact that Sodexo has on the environment. To achieve the accreditation, companies need to demonstrate compliance in a number of key areas including monitoring the impact of operations, setting targets and objectives, and demonstrating continuous improvement. The accreditation was achieved by Sodexo in less than six months and included a commitment to implementing glass recycling through improved effective waste segregation at the point of disposal. Sodexo also made a further commitment to minimise the environmental impact of the laundry service by reducing energy consumption through regular monitoring of high energy load equipment utilization. Sodexo's commitment to environmental management is part of its 'Better Tomorrow Plan', the company's sustainability strategy to 2020, which aims to consolidate the company's performance to date and provide a framework to measure the impact of its actions. Simon Scrivens, managing director, Sodexo Healthcare, said: "This achievement is a clear demonstration of Sodexo's commitment to the environment and to improving the standards of its operations at Gilbert Bain Hospital. "The next year will bring challenges and will require continued effort to maintain and build on high standards. I am very impressed with the dedication of the staff at the hospital, it has been a real team effort and everyone deserves credit for the successful implementation of the standard."
