Over 1 million school children offered eco-friendly lunches

14th Dec 2007 - 00:00
Abstract
Nearly 3000 schools are participating in the 'Fish and Kids' project, giving over 1 million school children the choice of sustainable fish at lunchtime.
Fish & Kids, part funded by DEFRA, aims to educate the next generation of consumers about the risks of over-fishing, and encourages school caterers to offer children sustainable fish using the MSC's independent seafood eco-label. The project is also designed to teach pupils how fish gets onto their plates, why it is good for them and why there is a danger of running out of fish. The scheme is continuing to grow in popularity, with Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan being the newest participants in the project and the first local authority in Wales. Surrey, Tower Hamlets, Liverpool, Herts, Birmingham and Clackmannanshire are already benefiting from eco-friendly lunches, with fish certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and supplied by Brakes. Sue Eakers, DSU group manager for schools and lifelong learning, said: "It is important that from a young age there is an understanding about where food comes from and how it is produced. This scheme will in turn encourage many to become responsible consumers in later life."
