Institute of Food Science & Technology announces Spring Conference

The Institute of Food Science & Technology (IFST) will address ‘some of the biggest’ nutritional challenges during its 2019 Spring Conference: ‘Nutritional Science over Gut Feel’.

Taking place 4 April at the University of Birmingham, this year’s annual event will discuss new scientific and technological research and innovation that is informing thinking in tackling some of the biggest nutritional challenges.

Director of human nutrition research centre at Newcastle University, John Mathers, will take to the stage to talk about genetic influences on weight loss.

He commented: “In my session at the IFST Spring Conference, I will aim to answer a few questions: Why is it so difficult for some people to lose weight? Is it down to their genes? Can we use genetic information to make more personalised, and more effective, weight loss interventions?”

  • Judith Buttriss, British Nutritional Foundation
  • Petra Klassen-Wigger, Nestlé Research
  • Jeff Brunstrom, University of Bristol
  • Maria Traka, Quadram Institute
  • Johnathan Napier, Rothamsted Research
  • Peter Mills, Nuffield Council on Bioethics 

IFST chief executive, Jon Poole, said: “IFST’s interest in nutrition comes from the perspective of how food science and technology can be applied in order to tackle the big nutritional challenges.

“We have a truly exceptional programme and line-up of speakers again this year to help provide evidence-based answers to this critical topic.”
